評估
步驟 1:初步金屬測試
We begin with a preliminary test using a stack of powerful earth magnets to help identify items that may contain magnetic metals. Since gold, silver, and platinum are not magnetic, any item that is attracted to the magnets contains non-precious metals and is not eligible for purchase. However, because many non-precious metals are also non-magnetic, this test is only an initial screening step and does not confirm whether an item contains precious metals.
步驟 2:按克拉和純度分類
After the initial screening, we examine each item for markings that indicate its metal type and purity. Gold purity is traditionally measured using the karat system, where pure gold is considered 24K. Gold can also be described by its fineness, which represents the amount of pure gold per 1000 parts. For example, 14K gold contains approximately 583 parts per 1000 pure gold (58.3%), with the remaining portion made up of other metals. Due to the softness of pure gold, jewellery is typically made with lower karat purities to improve durability and strength.
Gold jewellery may be stamped with karat markings such as 10K, 14K, or 18K, while fineness markings may appear as numbers such as 750 (18K gold). For silver items, we look for recognized sterling silver markings such as 925, STG, or STER. For 白金, common markings include PLAT, 950, and 900. If a stamp is not immediately visible, we use a jeweller’s loupe to inspect small areas where markings may be located, such as inside rings or on earring posts.
These markings help indicate the item's metal type and purity, but they do not guarantee the exact composition. Jewellery stamps generally represent an acceptable purity range, and every item is tested to verify its precious metal content before purchase.
After identifying any visible markings, we sort and organize your items by metal type 和 purity in front of you for full transparency. Items with clear purity markings can often be evaluated and estimated at this stage. If you decide to proceed with the sale, items will be tested to verify their precious metal content before purchase. Items without visible or clear markings may require testing before an accurate estimate can be provided.

Step 3: Metal Testing and Validation
To confirm the precious metal content and purity of your items, we may use one or more testing methods, including acid testing, specific gravity (density) testing, and/or X-ray fluorescence (XRF) testing. Acid testing involves creating a small mark on the item and should be considered a limited destructive test, while specific gravity and XRF testing are non-destructive methods.
As the customer, you are welcome to observe the testing process and our staff will be happy to explain the methods being used and answer any questions along the way. Due to the limited workspace in our stores, some testing equipment may be positioned facing the Precious Metals Analyst rather than the customer. When possible, our team is happy to turn the equipment towards you or provide photos of the display upon request.

酸性刮傷測試
的 acid scratch test is one of the oldest and most reliable methods used to help determine the purity of precious metals. During this test, we create a small scratch on a smooth testing stone (similar to slate) and compare the reaction against known samples. The scratch is made on the testing stone, though a small mark may remain on the item, particularly with higher purity metals.
Because this test may leave a mark, it is only performed with your approval once you have decided to proceed with selling. We always try to test in an inconspicuous area whenever possible.
For gold, we use a series of acids with increasing strengths to determine the approximate karat. We compare the reaction against known samples and continue with stronger acids until the purity is established. While 10K acid is commonly used as a starting point, many non-precious metals can also pass this test. If an item passes 10K but completely fails 14K acid, it is generally not considered gold. Gold-plated items will often flash green or disappear under stronger acids, revealing the underlying metal.
銀色 和 白金 are tested differently using specialized acids or different acid strengths. If the scratch test is inconclusive, we use additional methods such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF) or specific gravity testing to confirm the metal content.
Higher purity gold, particularly above 18K, often requires more rigorous testing to distinguish between similar purities. Items that do not meet our purchasing requirements will be returned to you.

Specific Gravity Testing
Specific gravity (SG) testing is a non-destructive method used to help confirm the density 和 approximate purity of gold, silver, and platinum. Since each precious metal has a unique density, measuring an item's specific gravity helps verify whether it matches the expected purity.
During this test, we weigh the item on a precision scale and then again while it is submerged in water. The difference between these measurements allows us to calculate its specific gravity. Our equipment can often display the approximate karat of gold or purity of platinum directly, while silver is evaluated using its specific gravity reading.
We also compare the calculated density to the expected range for the metal being tested. If the results are inconsistent, additional testing may be required or the item may be returned.
Specific gravity testing is most effective for solid, heavier items such as jewellery, coins, bars, and chains. It is less reliable for lightweight items, hollow pieces, jewellery containing stones, or items filled with another material, as these can affect the accuracy of the measurement.

X 射線螢光測試 (XRF)
X-ray fluorescence (XRF) testing is a non-destructive method used to analyze the surface composition of precious metals. By measuring the way a material responds to X-rays, the analyzer can identify the elements present and estimate their percentages.
XRF is especially useful for small items, such as fine chains, small earrings, and dental gold, or when additional verification is needed. However, because XRF only analyzes the surface of an item (typically 10-100 micrometers deep), the results may not accurately represent larger, thicker, plated, or filled items. Certain elements also cannot be detected accurately, which may affect the results.
For these reasons, XRF is used alongside our other testing methods, including visual inspection, acid testing, and specific gravity testing. We never purchase items based on an XRF reading alone, and if additional testing is required, we will explain the process before proceeding.
Step 4: Weighing
Once your items have been identified and sorted, we weigh them using a calibrated, high-precision scale. Depending on the quantity of items, we may weigh individual pieces separately or group items of the same metal type and purity together for evaluation. You are welcome to watch this process, and our team will be happy to explain how your items are being weighed.
When items are being purchased based on their precious metal content, we account for any non-precious components that may affect the weight, such as gemstones, watch movements, or other internal parts. If necessary, we may attempt to remove gemstones or other non-precious components; however, we cannot guarantee that the item will not be damaged during this process.
If an item is determined to contain a non-precious material inside or to be filled with another substance, we may evaluate the item based on the percentage of precious metal content, or in some cases attempt to remove the non-precious material before completing the purchase.
Step 5: Quoting
Our offer is based on the type of precious metal, purity, weight以及 current market prices. We provide a clear, no-obligation quote, and you are free to sell all, some, or none of your items.
For complete transparency, we provide a detailed receipt showing the weight, purity, and price of each item or metal category. If requested, we can also provide a printed estimate. Please note that estimates reflect current market prices and will be updated if you return to sell your items at a later date.
If additional testing is required to confirm an item's authenticity or value, such as cutting into a thickly plated piece, we will always explain the process and obtain your permission before proceeding.

Step 6: Purchase
We never charge for testing or evaluations, and if you decide to sell, we provide payment on the spot with no hidden fees. When available, we will do our best to accommodate larger cash payouts or provide payment by cheque.
